Tony was wounded in action on 17-18 November 1944 near Stolberg and was send to England to recover. He told his family he wanted to be with his unit again, he felt "safer" when he had control over his own condition, this was because the Germans were bombing near where the hospital was. While he was recovering in England he spent Christmas day with an English couple - The Priest's

On March 31 1945 he was injured again in the back of a truck when a phosphorus grenade he had accidentally exploded. Several men were injured, Tony the most severe, being very lucky that a Medical battalion was nearby and they could administer immediate first aid. They had to roll him on the ground to put out the flames. He was send to England again and on May 19 he went to America to Dibble hospital in California to complete his recovery.
